Obama to Crack Down on Tax Evasion?

This should be fun. The incoming Obama administration has eyed a new revenue source to help defray some of the budget shortfall.

Cracking down on offshore tax havens.

President-elect Barack Obama plans to crack down on international tax havens, including Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, within weeks of taking power in January, putting him on a collision course with Gordon Brown.

There is growing international pressure to outlaw the secretive practices of tax havens as a key part of reforms to the world's battered financial system, as the leaders of the world's 20 most powerful economies gather for a major conference in Washington next weekend....

Obama advisors estimate the measure could raise at least $50bn (£32bn) per year in lost US tax revenues, and Washington sources say leading accountancy firms have already hired lobbyists in anticipation of a fierce battle to water down the proposals.

Key measures are likely to include: revealing the beneficial owners of secretive trusts; prohibiting accountants from charging fees on specific tax services; and identifying 'offshore secrecy jurisdictions' that 'unreasonably restrict US tax authorities from obtaining needed information'. The measures could end years of financial secrecy that have protected the super-rich and international businesses as they move money from one jurisdiction to another.

This should be fun.

The German BND (equivalent to the Secret Service, more or less) paid $5 million for a CD containing information about German tax evaders, including the CEO of Deutsche Post, Germany's largest postal company. That information brought down a slew of high profile German businessmen who had screwed Berlin out of something like €4 billion ($5.1 billion) in tax revenue.

US tax officials paid for a copy of the CD which is said to include information on large scale tax evasion by Americans who transferred their assets to Lichtenstein. During hearings last summer, the informant who provided the BND the disk with account information indicated how the scam worked.

Heinrich Kieber, the same informant who provided the German government with the DVD containing information about German tax dodgers, provided videotaped testimony to the US Congress Thursday. In the tape, a disguised Kieber told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs investigations subcommittee about how European banks concealed money from government tax authorities.

For example, Kieber -- who now lives in the witness protection program under an assumed name -- described ruses the LGT Group bank used to hide money, such as setting up shell companies, which he described as "high-grade camouflage."

The testimony came one day after the same panel took aim at the LGT bank and Swiss banking giant UBS in a report accusing the banks of helping Americans evade paying up to $100 billion (€63.3 billion) annually.

oh yeah!

wow 2. ok, so far a few things have given me some good juju vibes. Maybe Sen. Byron Dorgan is having an effect because assuredly there are billions if not trillions parked by incorporating as a shell offshore.

Obama was a consigner on the

bill offered up this year by Sen Levin (D-MI) to tackle offshore tax havens.

It will be a great victory if he follows through. The question is whether he will follow through. With Rahm Emmanuel in the Chief of Staff seat, I'm skeptical.

In 1992, Clinton swept in like this, and look at how that turned out.

I really want to see the EFCA get passed. Because if it doesn't now it never will.

he also

co-sponsored The Patriot Employer Act of 2007.

This is only a 1% tax break for those creating jobs in the United States. Believe this or not, McCain had a stronger incentive to create jobs in the United States....that said, when this bill was announced the corporate lobbyists had a hissie fit.

So to me, the real question is will Government, not just Obama but the entire Congress kick these lobbyists out of D.C. They are the real ones destroying the nation in my view and manage to stop, rip out, destroy any attempts of putting U.S. Citizens, Americans first in jobs.

It's ridiculous too because other nations routinely negotiate for jobs..unfortunately our jobs, which this nation has just handed over in droves claiming it's part of trade.

I agree with you Emmanuel is the corporate lobbyists wet dream.

I think we should give Obama and Rahmbo..

...a little time to see how they are going to play it. COS don't make policy what that position is for is to get the WH it's way with the unruly, corrupt Congress.

Picking a guy known for his virtues as a hatchetman leads me to believe that Obama is expecting, and preparing for, a fight.

I could very well be wrong but watching what and how Rahmbo does his job will be an early sign of which way Obama is going....

which way

you forgot Rubins/DLC/corporate agenda. I agree we should simply focus on economics, trade, labor, global labor arbitrage and so on topics, monitor the wind and try to promote positive solutions as we find them. But passing judgment on a 3 day old administration probably isn't wise. Election over and this is what we have so let's just pray working America and the national interest wins over the swarming hordes of corporate lobbyists. That said, the swarming hordes of corporate lobbyists have already bought and paid for quite a bit and are literally on the hill, there is stamp out any attempts whatsoever to pass any bill that even remotely helps working America or is something they don't like.

It's the battle of the ages and we do not really know which side Obama is on even.

A couple more from OpenLeft

Emanuel rejected the idea of tying a pending economic stimulus plan to a proposed free-trade agreement with Colombia in order to win President George W. Bush's support during a post-election lame duck session of Congress.
"You don't link those essential needs to some other trade deal," he said. "The lame duck is for immediate things - that's what should be the focus right now."

The team is now consulting with liberal advocacy groups, Capitol Hill staffers and potential agency chiefs to prioritize those they regard as the most onerous or ideologically offensive.

can you format your links?

please, instructions in the user guide if you don't know how. This is a critical issue actually for posts to be indexed correctly by search engines. Google, search engines, RSS feeds, do not like raw links, they lower search rank because they cannot parse them and also consider sites who post them "less authoritative", plus it looks so much better.

Well, if they go through with this I have a funny feeling many of the Obamamaniacs will defect very quickly.
